PANDORA TRADITIONAL MANSION

Experience an atmosphere of sophistication, style and unique personal taste
[MAKRINITSA]

The village of Makrinitsa, often nick-named the 'balcony of Pelion' is 17 klms from Volos and 12 klms from Hania ski-resort. Magnificent mansions with panoramic views of Volos and the Pagasitikos Gulf cling miraculously to the edge of the hillside reflecting an era that can never be imitated. One of these homes that underwent extensive and outstanding restoration; an architectural masterpiece, is the "Pandora Mansion".

Its location is in a quiet spot pleasantly removed from the activity at the village square but easily accessible by a narrow street.

At a first glance only the weathered wooden, studded, double gates are beckoning and visible. However, hiding beyond this entrance lays the inspiration, passion and fulfilled dream of Maria Diamond. Using her expertise as an architect and landscape designer combined with specialized knowledge on renovation and restoration of historical buildings she ventured on a pilot project and gave birth finally to a new glory. It is thanks to her determination and patience that she has re-constructed a "monument" to her Greek heritage.
This three- storey building constructed in 1859, was originally the Mayor's residence. 125 years later the totally neglected mansion passed into Maria's hands for restoration and on a journey to a new future. Work started in 1986 and she battled incessantly with tradesmen to conserve every stone and piece of wood salvageable, in this once, derelict building.  Completion was after 5 strenuous years.

Pandora then transformed for its present use to its former glory was ready to accommodate its first guests and Maria to welcome them into this traditional and luxurious atmosphere. Since opening to the public in 1990 as an 'A' class traditional mansion Pandora has become an authentic haven of hospitality of high quality and its hostess has an established reputation for hosting VIPs and personalities from political, social, cultural and business backgrounds.

Welcome to Pandora!     Experience an atmosphere of sophistication, style and unique personal taste

What a view!   Images vary in accordance with nature and her seasons, each one portraying its individual aura; always inspiring and joyful. From the spacious courtyard at the height of 700 meters above sea-level one has the unusual experience to enjoy a bird's eye view of Volos and the ships sailing back and forth in the Gulf to the Sporadic Islands.
Amble amongst the terraces paved with 'pelion flag-stones', discover decorative marble fountains, hand-chipped stone benches, terracotta urns, flower borders of roses, geraniums and chrysanthemums  interspersed with oleander, lotus, olive, cherry and pomegranate trees.  Relax underneath the shade of an old fig tree and if your timing is right you will be accompanied by the background music of chiming church bells or to a concert of nightingales singing in the summer evenings.

Enter Pandora !

The entrance on the first floor is accessed by steps which have an aged grape- vine embedded into them; having survived the re-construction under Maria's tender loving care. On entering the mansion one faces a small reception area embedded into rocky hillside: a cosy seating area to the left with a decorative, working, fire-place and an enchanting breakfast room with a carved and painted wooden ceiling to the right. Although the characteristic features of this splendid building are the thick stone walls, windows with arched surrounds and wide ledges daintily decorated with white embroidered curtains; inbuilt cupboards, and chestnut wood flooring one's attention is immediately drawn to the original wooden pine staircase leading to spacious landings on the second and third floors.   A Murano, pale pink, Venetian chandelier, a precious family heirloom, decorates the second floor landing from which are accessible two very individual and attractive suites: Thalia and Sapfo.

Accommodation located in the main building: 2nd floor. Suites

Thalia:  This luxurious accommodation comprises of two rooms on one level. The bedroom has a double- bed with a beautiful view of Volos harbour.  In the sitting room there is one of the most exquisite features of the mansion: an elaborate fireplace not only decorative but also is warm and glowing on chilly winter days. The long comfortable sofa provides extra sleeping space for 2 persons, (adults or children). Throughout the suite one can admire hand made wooden-painted ceilings, crystal light fittings, original paintings, wollen and silk carpets.
The shower room/ W.C,  is situated midway between the two rooms and is decorated with marble tiles.

Sapfo:  This is the successful conversion of the original kitchen and pantry and the most intriguing room of all. Usage of space was of utmost importance and Maria's skills were tested to the extreme with this design.

The unusual style of Sapfo means it has acquired itself the nick name of 'the up and down suite' because of its three different levels. One has to climb wooden stairs and duck underneath a supporting beam to enter the main bedroom; it has a double- bed and single with a lovely view towards Volos harbour.  The sitting room has a charming aged feel about it with wooden cupboards and part of a chimney inset into thick stone walls. It has sleeping space on a sofa for 2 small children or 1 adult. The tasteful and exquisite decor is completed by painted wooden ceilings, original paintings, pieces of traditional costume, antique plates, and attractive light fittings. There are stone steps from the seating area to the marble-tiled shower room/ W.C

Not to mention an elaborate plaster ceiling decoration that was painstakingly renovated piece by piece. From the front room there is balcony facing Volos.
