NAME DAY
Traditionally the 'nameday' is celebrated in Greece and not the birthday. Most names are taken from saints and therefore people will celebrate on the saints name day, which is always on the same date on the calendar. Generally speaking there is an open house on one's name day. No invitations are forthcoming as it is taken for granted that friends and relatives will pop in. In fact many professional people in the cities will put an announcement in the newspaper when necessary to say that they will not be celebrating their nameday as sometimes circumstances do not permit it.
