Terraced into the verdant slopes of Northeast Pelion at an altitude of around 350 metres, Mouresi is a village that captivates the senses. Boasting panoramic views over the Aegean Sea, the picturesque harbour of Damouchari, and the stunning Papa Nero beach below, it offers an idyllic setting. On clear days, the views stretch as far as Halkidiki, and watching the sunrise behind Mount Athos is truly magical. Located just a 5-minute drive from Tsagarada and Kissos, it serves as an ideal base for exploring.
The community unfolds across acres of lush countryside, featuring traditional stone-built houses and grand old merchants' mansions dotted amongst the trees. The heart of the village is the flagstone square, home to the lovely Church of the Holy Trinity, shaded by mature Linden Trees. This square hosts festivals and cultural events throughout the year, bringing local traditions to life. A short distance away, the old Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary stands as a prime example of a basilica, noted for its artful construction and exquisite carved wooden iconostasis.
Nature is ever-present and dramatically transforms Mouresi with the seasons. In spring, houses are almost camouflaged by a flurry of blossoms, soon replaced by infinite green foliage – a welcome refuge from the summer heat. Autumn brings its own spectacular display as the forests dress in stunning shades of amber, rust, bronze, and gold. Surrounded by chestnut, apple, cherry, and olive trees, the landscape truly earns its local nickname, "village of the flowers." The higher altitude means Mouresi often enjoys cooler summer temperatures than the coast.
Despite its tranquillity, Mouresi offers convenient amenities. There are 5 restaurants/tavernas (two within walking distance of Silk Tree Cottage, along with a mini-market stocking basic provisions). You'll also find a bakery, butcher, greengrocer, two other grocery stores, and coffee shops, ensuring your daily needs are easily met. The village square itself boasts a taverna with delightful sea views.
Mouresi serves as an ideal base for a walking holiday, with numerous trails leading from the village (ask Jill at Silk Tree Cottage for guided options!). A short drive (7-10 minutes) takes you to the beautiful beaches of Damouchari, Papa Nero, and Plaka, as well as the cosmopolitan resort of Agios Ioannis. Within approximately 15 minutes, you can reach Tsagarada's famed beaches, Mylopotamos and Fakistra. Tsagarada itself, famous for its enormous 800+ year-old plane tree, diverse restaurants, cafes, and craft shops, is only a 5-minute drive away.
To make the most of your visit and explore the wider Pelion region, hiring a car is recommended. However, for enthusiastic walkers focusing on the trails around Mouresi, a car might not be essential. There is a limited local bus service. Ample parking is generally available in the area, including the free on-site parking at Silk Tree Cottage.
