SIGHTSEEING > EASTERN PELION > FAVOURITE VILLAGES > MOURESI

Another Pelion gem, 3 klm north of Tsagarada. It is amphitheatrically built above Pelion's picturesque port of Damouhari and the spacious beach of Papa Nero beyond which follows Pelion's oldest seaside resort of Agios Ioannis [St. John's]. Mouresi has a stunning view of the sea and the mountains. On a clear day one can see Halkidiki and the sunrise behind Mount Athos. Mouresi overlooks a deep valley whose great beauty is known only to the few lovers of nature, the initiates, who have sought out a guide to take them down the deep recesses of the ravine where two cascading streams form natural pools in whose ice-cold waters only nereids and nymphs have bathed since the dawn of time. The hiker will then resurface into civilization, a changed person with a twinkle in his eye.

The village's flag-stoned, main square is dominated by a tall linden tree that generously lends its shade to the beautiful church of Holy Trinity. A few hundred meters down the main road there is the old church of the Dormition of Virgin Mary, which is a prime example of a basilica, quite artfully built and decorated with an old, carved wooden iconostasis of exquisite craftsmanship.

Mouresi makes for an ideal base for a walking holiday. For guided walks and traditional accommodation see the Old Silk Store.
